The image shows Lord Nelson’s Monument, the Cathedral and Bridge of Sighs and Sir Walter Scott’s Monument and was written to a recent emigrant to Canada, Miss Catherine Carmichael, c/o Mr MacArthur, Rob Ruadh Hotel, Young Street, Toronto. and is endorsed to be carried on the Cunard vessel “Europa”. The writer refers to the lowering of the Main Street of Gorbals to allow the Neilston and Barrhead Railway to pass over it. “I strayed on to the said railway but was warned off and directly a train came rushing past..have you railways in Canada? By the bye have you seen the Fall of Niagara which I perceive from the map is not far distant from Toronto and which is allowed by some travellers to be the sublimest object on earth”.
