HA 101 - Letter Paper and Note paper of the ChineseJunk Keying publsihed by Rock & Co, London c 1848
Probably published to mark the arrival of the Junk in London from Boston in 1848. The two sheets show the transition from the larger Letter Paper to the smaller Note Paper, the latter intended to fit inside the new envelopes. Note the loss of detail in the small boats surrounding the Junk on the Note Paper. Charles Jermingham quotes from Dr. Mayo on the letter sheet: What will finally become of the Chinese? Of the highest natural mental capacity, after having made the first and most difficult steps in civilization, they have fallen into a state of apathy, and instead of latterly advancing, have retrograded. The Chinese remains a clever precocious child in a protracted juvenile decrepitude”.
